ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Economics at the University of Barishal is a center of academic excellence committed to advancing economic understanding through teaching, research, and policy engagement. Since its inception, the department has sought to equip students with the intellectual tools and analytical frameworks necessary to interpret, evaluate, and influence the complex economic realities of today’s world. As part of the Faculty of Social Sciences, the department offers a comprehensive and contemporary curriculum that combines rigorous theoretical foundations with applied and empirical approaches. Core areas of study include microeconomics, macroeconomics, development economics, econometrics, environmental and resource economics, and public policy analysis. A seminar titled “Relevance of Economics and Research: Prospect for Future Engagement” was successfully held today [22th January 2026], organized by the Department of Economics, University of Barishal.The session featured Dr. Sajjad Zohir, Executive Director of the Economic Research Group (ERG), as the keynote speaker. In his insightful discussion, Dr. Zohir highlighted the crucial role of economics and research in addressing real-world policy and development challenges.He especially encouraged students to move beyond a purely job-oriented mindset and instead apply their acquired and self-developed knowledge to serve the country. Champions of Hult Prize 2025–2026 Barishal University

Two students from the Department of Economics at the University of Barishal, S.M. Shakaout Srabon and Jeba Tasnim Karima, have secured the title of Hult Prize 2025–2026 Champions at Barishal University by presenting a forward-thinking and sustainable initiative. The Hult Prize is an international student entrepreneurship platform that inspires young innovators to create business solutions addressing global challenges in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With this achievement, the team has progressed to the National Round, representing Barishal University and building on their success at the university level. This accomplishment reflects the academic excellence and innovative spirit of the Department of Economics and stands as a source of pride for the University of Barishal.
